By the time I was set up and comfy, it was already 7:30. Three and a half hours to edit and write a new chapter.
Yes, you heard that right. A new chapter. At Chapter 25. My editor, Val Jones decided that the ending of the POV was too abrupt and that we need to be inside that POV when that character steps through the doors of her old Academy. With the questions she asked, it was either adding another 2,000 to a 5,500 word chapter, or split it off into it's own, to end the POV and shift to another POV.
Tired brain and all, the decision to write was put off and I edited the previous night's offerings instead. So, it must be a good sign if I'm giggling at my own writing, huh?
Tonight, it's Chapter 25 which should be a short chapter. Then it's back to Kat's POV and her run-ins with the Mistresses.
Kinjara's fast becoming one of my favorite characters to write. She's smart, funny, sardonic and her timing's pretty good. Cela is another fun character, but her accent trips me up. And I'm loving how I shifted Tristien in this draft.
Last draft, Tristien seemed more like a victim to me, which wasn't how I saw her at all. This draft, she takes much more control over her own destiny which is what I want to portray. The idea for Tristien is that despite her strength and balance (over the course of the series, she WILL get balanced at one point), she is still a creature of fate.
Kat... Kat's always been cool. I'm really glad I've been able to portray how cool she is because, you know how some people just exude coolness? Think James Dean. There's been a real fear in me that I would be unable to convey the "je ne sais quois" quality. But I think I've done it.
Anyway, let's hope I can create Chapter 25 tonight.
